Tony Bennett becomes oldest living artist to top Billboard chart

American jazz singer Tony Bennett is the oldest living person to top the US album chart. The 85-year-old crooner’s latest recording “Duets II” debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart this week. The album features collaborations with various pop stars, including Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, and the late Amy Winehouse.

“Duets II” is Bennett’s first number one album in the United Sates and made him the first octogenarian to top the US charts. The singer’s 2006 release “Duets: An American Classic” made it as far as number three in the charts. Before Bennett, Bob Dylan was the oldest artist to score a US number one album, with his 2009 release “Together Through Life”, but the folk legend was only 67. According to Billboard, “Duets II” has sold around 179,000 copies since its release on 20 September.

This week’s Billboard albums chart also saw “Own the Night” by country band Lady Antebellum drop one place to number two and songstress Adele’s “21″ fall to number three. Disney star Demi Lovato’s “Unbroken” debuted in fourth place, while “The Reckoning” by Christian rock band Needtobreathe was another new entry at number six.

Tony Bennett is one of the legends of jazz and pop music, having one of the most impressive careers in the music business. He has released more than 70 albums and scored numerous hits. The crooner, whose career took off in the early 50s, has won 15 Grammys so far, including a lifetime achievement award in 2001. Bennett caused some controversy last week, when he commented in an interview with Howard Stern that the 9/11 attacks were a result of US foreign policy. However, he promptly issued an apology, saying that he was “grateful” to be American.

“Duets II” features collaborations with an impressive list of pop stars and music legends, from Lady Gaga and Mariah Carey to Aretha Franklin and Willie Nelson. The song “Body and Soul”, a duet with Amy Winehouse, is believed to be the late British singer’s last recording. The single was released on 14 September, which would have been Winehouse’s 28th birthday. All proceeds from the sales of “Body and Soul” are to benefit the Amy Winehouse Foundation. “Duets II” also includes collaborations with Lady Gaga, on the song “The Lady is a Tramp”, with Michael Bublé on “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”, and with several other artists.
